(Reuters) - Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam have sacked coach Alfred Schroeder after Thursday's 1-1 draw with Volendam. Alfred Schreuder's club said his side extended their unbeaten run to seven league games.

Schreuder was appointed in May to succeed Erik ten Hag on a two-year deal after leaving the Amsterdam club to take over as Manchester United manager.

But with Ajax in fifth place in the Eredivisie, seven points behind leaders Feyenoord after 18 games, they decided to join former club Blaugrana. Day (Brugge) coaches parted ways.

“It was a painful decision, but it was necessary,” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said in a statement. “ No matter how the season started, we all lost a lot of unnecessary points. Football itself is also unstable.

“We had a long, long winter break because of the World Cup. We gave Alfred our time and trust to change the way things were played. To us, it was clear that he couldn't change the tide. "

Ajax have not won in the league since defeating RKC Waalwijk on October 23 and have played their last six games.
