Kylian Mbappe reveals his plan to win the Champions League after new contract with PSG

Kylian Mbappe has categorically stated that one of his major goals at Paris Saint-Germain is to help the club claim their first UEFA Champions League trophy. The Frenchman also admitted that the thought of becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer was a major factor in his decision to sign a new contract at Parc De Princes.

Mbappe’s transfer saga involving Real Madrid and PSG is one that will be well remembered by fans in years to come. With a dream transfer to the Spanish giants all but in place, the Frenchman made a U-turn at the 11th hour and decided to stay put at PSG.

Many were quick to claim that money has ruined football and perhaps that was the only thinking that made the 23-year-old rethink his decision. Admittedly, his new contract will leave him with numbers like never heard before in football but Mbappe has now cleared the air on the reason he chose to extend with PSG.

Mbappe explains his targets after new contract with PSG

Since joining PSG from Monaco in 2017, Mbappe has recorded 170 goals for PSG across all competitions.

With the uncertainty surrounding his future now resolved for the time being, Mbappe has revealed he has plans to break the club's all-time scoring record; 200 goals scored by Edinson Cavani between 2013 and 2020.

More importantly, the Frenchman stressed the importance of the Champions League to the club and revealed it is also high on his priority list.

"Winning the Champions League and being PSG's all-time top scorer are part of my goals, although there are more than just those two," he said in an interview with RMC Sport.

"The Champions League is a clear goal. Nothing else needs to be said to describe the Champions League. We want to win it and we have a way to win it."

He added: "This season, we were less scary, less untouchable. We want to intimidate France again, which is something we haven't done in the last two years."

It took Cavani a total of 301 games to reach 200 goals but Mbappe is expected to better that number, given that his current scoring rate is better at 170 goals in just 216 appearances across all competitions.

Mbappe enjoyed another fine 2021/22 campaign, where he bagged 39 goals and has hit at least 30 goals in all but one of his campaigns with PSG.

"It would be something spectacular to be PSG's top scorer," Mbappe added. "I think that if I continue doing things as I have done up to now, there will be no problems."

Following his new contract, Mbappe becomes the highest-paid player in world football on wages of around £1m a week.
