Vinicius Jr speaks on Mbappe saga; hints at Madrid extension talks

Vinicius Jr has opened up to the media about his thoughts in the Kylian Mbappe transfer saga while speaking on his contract extension talks with Real Madrid.

The Brazilian winger was one of the possible victims of Mbappe's potential arrival because he occupies the same spot which the blistering forward occupies on the pitch.

However, following the 23-year-old's decision to remain at Parc De Princes, Vinicius can rest easy knowing that he still has Madrid's right wing on lock.

In a recent interview, the 21-year-old was asked to share his thoughts on the issue. Looking to avoid controversy, the 2020 Copa America runner-up said: "This is a topic we cannot discuss right now. Each player has his own decision and he has decided to stay in Paris. That's it."

This reply from Vinicius comes after veteran Luka Modric, who is also having contract extension talks with Madrid shaded the French forward in an interview. "I haven't renewed yet, but I'm not going to do a Mbappe," Modric said to Spanish outlet COPE.

"I hope the club doesn't do it to me. We have a good relationship. I have said many times that I want to finish my career here."

Vinicius was also asked about the recent claims by the media that he was leaving Madrid at the end of his contract and that a possible Paris Saint-Germain move was on the cards.

He debunked those claims while noting that he and Madrid were discussing new terms and that he would prefer to finish his career at the Spanish giants.

"I'm happy here, I'm close to my renewal, we're moving forwards and I'm very happy at the biggest club in the world," he said.

"I don't want to leave here, I want to stay as long as Marcelo, Karim [Benzema] and Luka [Modric] have stayed, players who have made a very beautiful story and I want to continue like them. I'm a Madrid guy and I am happy here."

Vinicius is the most improved player in football after failing to catch up to the difference between South American and European football for three seasons.

This season, he has put up numbers that combine his total output from his debut season at Madrid in 2018/19 up until the 2020/21 season. He finished the season behind Karim Benzema in the club's highest goalscorer list with 17 goals and 10 assists in 35 La Liga games.

He also finished joint second with Raul De Tomas of Espanyol and Iago Aspas of Celta De Vigo.

His new contract should see him stay until 2026 at least, when he will be 26 years old.
