Everton have reportedly offered Frank Lampard the manager's job after being turned down by former player Wayne Rooney.

Lampard, 43, has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea last January.

Everton, meanwhile, have been looking for a new manager since parting company with Rafa Benitez earlier this month.

The Spaniard won three of his first four but only one of his final 13 games at Goodison Park before being dismissed.

Earlier in the day, ex-Toffees favourite Rooney revealed earlier he had rejected the opportunity to discuss the vacancy in order to remain with Championship strugglers Derby.

Speaking earlier on Friday, Rooney said: "Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job, but I turned them down.

"It was a difficult decision. I believe I will be a Premier League manager and that I am ready for that 100%.

"If that comes with Everton, great. But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me."

Vitor Pereira, who was sacked by Fenerbahce in December, had appeared to be the frontrunner.

However, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had a change of heart after an angry reaction from supporters.

Pereira, 53, has also managed Porto, 1860 Munich and Olympiacos.

Lampard took Chelsea to fourth place and the FA Cup final in his only full season in charge at Stamford Bridge while under a transfer embargo.

However, after significant investment — including signing Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell — Lampard was sacked in January 2021 following a run of five defeats in eight.

Everton's next fixture is against Brentford on Saturday, February 5 in the FA Cup fourth round.
