Report: Manchester City target a midfield signing after Erling Haaland business is wrapped up

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester City will look to sign a midfielder once they wrap up Erling Haaland’s signing.

City emerged as the favourites to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker from among a host of top European clubs. The operation for the 21-year-old striker is said to reach £400 million as agent fees and commissions, release clause paid to the club and the player’s salary will command some of the biggest amounts in football transfer post-pandemic.

The Saudi Arabia-bankrolled club are reportedly going to pay Haaland £500,000 per week but will still have enough for another pursuit that may be cost-intensive, according to Romano.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, the famous transfer insider confirmed that Pep Guardiola is interested in a midfielder with team captain Fernandinho announcing his exit from the club at the end of the season.

The Haaland transfer is expected to be wrapped up in the coming week, which will open up the space for a midfielder hunt. Romano also revealed that the club have set their sights on Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes.

The 23-year-old impressed Guardiola when City faced off against Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Guardiola praised him after their first leg tie, calling him one of the best in the world. Nunes is reported to be keen on the transfer, hoping to play under Guardiola who he also called ‘the best in the world’.

He is valued at €40 million and but any moves for him will depend on how smoothly the club can get through negotiations with Mino Raiola and Alfie Haaland regarding Erling Haaland.

Elsewhere, La Gazzetta dello Sport has made claims of a falling out between Guardiola and Raheem Sterling.

Th forward emerged as a target for AC Milan recently as the club discusses a €1 billion takeover with a Bahrain-based firm. Sterling has also been linked with moves away from the Etihad since the beginning of the season, but it was put to rest with authentic reports of Guardiola asking the club to renegotiate Sterling’s contract in order to keep him at the club.

Sterling has been in and out of City’s squad this season, which could be the catalyst for their falling out, however, there is no substantial evidence to back this up, and it could be chalked up to media machinations to push Sterling to Milan links in Italy.
