Man City: Pep hails Bernardo as best in the league

After what was another impressive display against Aston Villa, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola feels Bernardo Silva is the best player in the Premier League.

Golden Silva performance delights Pep

Portuguese star Silva was once again a key figure in the City attack, as they managed to secure a 2-1 win on the road and inflict Villa's first Premier League defeat under new manager Steven Gerrard.

Ruben Dias opened the scoring for the visitors, before Silva popped up with a contender for goal of the month shortly before the half-time whistle.

With City on the counter-attack, Gabriel Jesus broke down the right flank and lofted a perfect cross, before Silva lashed the ball home on the volley just inside the box.

The goal capped off another top-rate display from Silva and Guardiola feels the playmaker is once again one of the best players in England right now.

"Silva was the best in the league two or three seasons ago and he is the best in the league at the moment," Guardiola said. "You would have to look at the tapes from three years ago, when we had 98 points, and you see the player he is now.

"He has special ability and can do whatever he wants. It was an incredible finish against a really good goalkeeper. Without caring, you feel he can do these actions."

Guardiola added: "He scored a fantastic goal. It depends on him, how good he can be. When a player has this quality it depends on them. He is a player on another level."

City eager to keep hold of Silva

There has been some speculation regarding Silva's future at the Etihad, with the 27-year-old having been linked with a move away from Manchester last summer.

The arrival of £100million signing Jack Grealish added further to the speculation over Silva's future, but it's England international Grealish who was on the bench against the Villans.

Silva has said he's happy at City and the club find themselves in a strong position with his current contract set to expire in 2025, meaning any side wishing to lure Silva away from Manchester would have to spend big money to land the Lisbon-born star.

Silva key in busy month

On current form, Silva looks set to play a key role in a festive period that will go a long way in deciding how the team's Premier League fortunes will fare this season.

Guardiola is blessed with a squad that has quality cover in all positions, so the Spanish tactician will be keeping a close eye on avoiding burnout for his top stars.

After that impressive display at Villa, and with a high level of consistency, it looks like Silva could be one of the contenders for Premier League player of the season this term.
