The participating teams of The Emperor of Japan Cup are all Japan Football Association member teams (J1 League, J2 League and amateur teams). The competition is divided into 7 rounds. From the second round, teams in The J1 and J2 leagues will compete in the knockout round with one match against the other. If a draw is made in the 90 minutes and overtime is played, the result will be decided on penalties.The final was played in the middle of the pitch, with a draw in the 90th minute and extra time until penalties were taken to determine the winner.The champion of the Emperor Cup qualifies for the AfC Champions League next season.
