Aston Villa: Dismal run forces Villa's hand

Poor run costs Smith

It has not necessarily been easy for Smith this season having lost skipper Jack Grealish in the summer, but Villa were quick to splash the £100million cash to fill the void, with the likes Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings brought in to try and ensure their talisman's absence would not be telling.

Despite a shock opening-day defeat at Watford, Villa appeared to have settled as they picked up 10 points from their next five games, culminating in a rare win at Old Trafford.

However, that was the last success for Villa fan Smith with his side since losing to Tottenham, Wolves, Arsenal and West Ham before Southampton's victory proved to be the final straw for the club's hierarchy.

Search for new boss begins

Having spent close to all of the money received from the sale of Grealish the pressure was always going to be on Smith, and with the Villans dangerously close to the relegation zone, albeit after just 11 games, the club has decided to act now to give themselves plenty of time to pull clear of danger.

"This year we have not seen the continuous improvement in results, performances and league position which we have all been looking for," said Villa chief Christian Purslow.

"For this reason we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact."

Due to the international break, Aston Villa are not next in action until 20th November when they host Brighton, although whether there will be a permanent new manager in place remains to be seen.
